The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Institutes of Health, American Heart Association, and your Greenwald & Gerke Senior Real Estate Specialists team celebrate February as American Heart Month. The intent is to shine a light on heart health.
The Bad News: Cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of death in the U.S., for both women and men.
The Good News: You can do many things to protect your heart and maintain your health.
Understand Your Risks
· High blood pressure and high blood cholesterol are two major risk factors for heart disease.
· February is an ideal time to get both checked. If either number is high, you and your doctor can embark on efforts to bring it down to a safer range.
Follow a Heart-Healthy Lifestyle
· You can take key steps to reduce your chance of having a heart attack or stroke.
· Lowering your risk of heart disease also will improve overall health and well-being.
· Major risk factors include lack of physical activity, poor diet and tobacco use. Modifying each of these is within your control.
· If you smoke, stop!
· If you don’t exercise, start!
· Learn about heart-healthy eating so you can make wise food choices and maintain a healthy weight.
· Eat more fruits and vegetables. Limit foods that contain fat – especially trans fats – and added sugars. Check product labels before you buy.
· Getting sufficient sleep and managing stress will also help you thrive.
