Memory care is important not only in the later years of life, but younger generations should also be proactive about prevention through diet and lifestyle. Small, incremental changes can positively impact overall health, which also helps reduce the risk of memory problems down the road.

Risk Factors for Heart Disease and Dementia

Recently, a study published in the Journal of American Geriatrics Society showed a connection between the risk factors for dementia and the risk factors for heart disease. Researchers concluded that lifestyle changes to reduce the risk of heart disease might also positively impact closing cognitive decline.

Even though heart disease and cognitive decline aren’t necessarily connected, these findings suggest that overall health improvements can reduce the risk of serious health concerns – such as heart disease and dementia.

One study showed that people who have memory problems and don’t exercise regularly typically have at least one additional risk factor for heart disease, such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, or other health conditions.

Two Essential Habits: Diet and Exercise

Researchers looked at two lifestyle factors that play a role in preventing disease: diet and exercise. The theory is that changing these lifestyle choices will help to lower the risk of cognitive decline and heart disease.

·       Diet: The recommendations for dietary changes include heart-healthy foods, such as guidelines outlined in the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet. This eating plan focuses on low-sodium food choices, with plenty of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, poultry, fish, nuts, beans, and low-fat dairy products.

·       Exercise: Additionally, a regular exercise routine with at least 35 minutes sessions three times per week is helpful to lower the risk of disease. Researchers found that exercise helps to improve the participants’ ability to remember, think, and make decisions.
