What is “forest bathing” and why should you indulge in it? Actually there is no “forest” and you will not be “bathing,” so no need for bug spray or a big, fluffy towel.
The phrase evokes a relaxing sanctuary in a serene atmosphere. That’s precisely what’s behind the forest bathing concept, which was initially created by a Japanese government agency to encourage people to immerse themselves in nature as a way to alleviate stress. We think it’s a great idea!
Anxiety Can Adversely Affect Mind and Body
· We all get stressed occasionally; more so over the last couple years due to the pandemic. But excessive stress can lead to depression and physical maladies.
· “Absorbing the forest atmosphere,” as suggested by the term shinrin-yoku, can put you in a calmer state of body and mind, possibly even reducing blood pressure.
· Just 10 or 20 minutes a day of mindful relaxation in nature can positively impact your well-being.
Where Do You Find Your Forest?
Look around you! There is no need to take a long (and potentially stressful) drive to an out-of-the way location. Just go outside, find a park, head for the beach, sit under a tree, stroll along a trail, or rediscover that cozy little nook in your own back yard.
How Do You Bathe?
First of all, turn off your cellphone! Commit to detaching, relaxing, observing, absorbing, and remaining fully in the moment.
· Listen to birds chirping.
· Feel the warmth of the sun on your (sun-screened) skin.
· Smell the scent of the ocean or fresh breeze through the trees.
· Breathe in the beauty of nature and breathe out any stress within you.
