Pets can provide companionship and bring a measure of happiness to an older adult. But maintaining a pet can sometimes be a financial hardship – particularly for those on a limited income. The costs of pet food, veterinary care, vaccinations, and needed accessories can quickly add up!
If you’re not able to meet all of your pet’s needs, there are often free or low-cost resources available to be found in your community. Here’s what you need to know:
Pet Food Assistance
Many Meals on Wheels programs around the country are mindful of their senior customers’ need to feed their pets too. Participating programs will help with pet care costs and even deliver pet food and supplies. Some will even help you to find a volunteer dog walker!
Low-cost Veterinarian Care
Annual pet checkups and vaccinations are a regular part of animal care, but these visits to the veterinarian can easily be challenging when funds are limited. If you’re behind on booster shots or need an examination, talk to your community animal shelter. They may be able to refer you to a low-cost pet clinic or other local options. If you live near a veterinary school, they also may offer pet care services at a reduced cost.
Other Resources and Options
The Humane Society of the US is another excellent resource to turn to if you find you’re not able to provide for all of your pet’s needs. Whether you need pet food or other necessities, your local branch may be able to assist.
Lastly, it’s always worth asking for a senior discount on everything from pet food to yearly shots and exams. Because you’ll never know help is available unless you ask for assistance. Support is out there!
